SALES & SPECIALS!

Page two of our fly tying materials catalog contains a wide variety of staple items used by tiers to make high-quality saltwater flies. Note that we are continually updating our catalog with new products, and new product photos. Please look carefully at the text description for the products that interest you - due to space constraints we don't post a photo for every single product up front on the page, but products without a headline graphic often contain a link to photos in the product heading.

Advanced Navigation Hints: Use the "Home" button on your keyboard to return to the top of the page at any time. Use Ctl+F to Find items you are looking for (Press the Ctrl and "F" keys at the same time, then enter any keyword that you like). Mac users press Command+F for the same utility.

Popper Blanks

Rainy's foam popper heads are excellent for making poppers for big, aggressive fish like bluefish, striped bass, dolphin, barracuda, tarpon, snook, jacks, largemouth bass, and even false albacore and small tunas. Pencil Popper heads are long and thin for ease of casting and a slim profile. Any of these foam heads can be used to make a popper, or reversed to make a slider style of fly. Tie one up, tie it on, then hold on!

Please note: we list all of these popper heads with the manufacturer's designations, but just because a popper is labelled as #1/0, #2/0, etc., does not guarantee that they will fit perfectly on a given hook style or size. Please read the descriptions carefully as we have listed the exact measurements for all of the popper heads shown below - for a good fit, the length of the popper should be similar to the shank length of the hook that you plan to use. Any of these foam popper heads can easily be trimmed to length with a sharp blade for a custom fit on the hook style of your choice. Where possible, we have made a few suggestions for possible hook/popper head match-ups. Please be aware the these popper heads are typically formed by hand by the folks who make them, so some small variations in size/shape are possible.

We offer some good hooks for poppers on Page 1 of our fly tying materials catalog, including traditional kinked-shank style popper hooks like the Mustad CK74S and the Umpqua U505. Other useful long-shank hook styles for poppers are the Gamakatsu SP11-3L3H and the Gamakatsu "Spinnerbait" hook, as well as the Mustad S74SNP-34011. For really big poppers, try the Owner Longshanks.

rainys foam popper heads

Foam Cylinders

Foam Popper Cylinders: Cylindrical foam popper heads are easy to work with, and great for any style of slider, popper, or banger style fly. Drill a hole through them with a stiff needle, stick them on the hook, and you're in business. Put a tube through the middle, and these can be rigged on the leader in front of any fly to turn it into a surface popper. Color them with permanent markers, or add prismatic reflective tape and eyes and dress 'em up to make Bob's Banger styles and more. The 1/8" or 3/16" size can fit inside body tubings for floating sand eels, 1/4" and 5/16" are great for small sliders and to make a little "floaty fly" (floating toad fly) for tarpon fishing!. Medium sizes make flies for bluefish, jacks, & GT's and the big ones make heads for marlin & sailfish flies. Because they are handcrafted, the cylinders we offer may vary between 1.25 and 1.50 inches long. Some of the larger sizes are pictured above. Note that some small variations in the dimensions of the sizes are possible... some of the 1" size cylinders will measure just under 1" in diameter, as they are finished by hand by the folks that make them. Quantity per pack is shown below. All sizes are $3.99 per pack. Related items: Prismatic Reflective Decorator Tape.

howitzer foam popper heads

Howitzer Popper Heads

Howitzer Popper Heads are next-generation soft foam popper heads that provide new options for tying baitfish poppers. The Howitzer imitates the head of a small minnow (or baitfish) that is splashing and sipping at the surface of the water. It's designed with a deep recess at the back of the head so that an articulated body and tail of a minnow can be embedded seamlessly into the back of the head. As a result, the body of the minnow hangs down in the water (roughly at a 45-degree angle) and moves enticingly in a position that can be seen by predatory fish from a long distance and offers them an irresistible profile and an easy opportunity for a meal! The Large size heads are approximately 1 inch long and 1 inch wide (1 inch is about 25mm); the Medium are about 3/4 inch long and 3/4 inch wide (20mm). The eye holes on the large size will accept the 9/32" eye (8.5mm); the Medium accepts about a 7/32" eye (6mm). $8.95/pack.

Flash

Flashabou colors

Flashabou - some of the "Tinsel" colors

Flashabou: This is the original flash material! Lots of action and reflectivity make this one of the most important materials to add to saltwater flies to help bring them to life. The "Tinsel" colors feature opaque mylar strands with a metallic look (colors marked with an * are blended tinsel colors). Colors shown in the photo above, from left to right are Electric Blue, Purple, Gold, Copper, and Lime Green.
The "Pearl" colors feature translucent, pearly strands. The Glow colors glow in the dark! The numbers refer to the manufacturer's color code - if you need to match a sample, look on the header card of the color you're using for a 4 digit number on the upper right.

Polarflash: This is one of our all-time favorite materials for adding flash to a fly. Sometimes referred to as "Sparkle Hair"... A few strands adds a perfect subtle highlight, more strands makes a bold splash! Great action in the water, and very natural looking flash highlights due to the fact that the colors are blended - if we were stranded on a desert island and could take only one type of flash to tie flies with, Polarflash would be it! 5.99/pack

DNA Holo Fusion Flash: Striking flash/fiber material by DNA - similar to Polarflash, but with fine fiber color strands mixed in. Fire Fly Tye: Finely crinkled flash strands create a very bright, reflective appearance in the water. Popular flash material to use inside braided tubing bodies (Corsair, E-Z Body, etc.). Ripple Ice Fiber

Ripple Ice Fiber: This is a very interesting new flash fiber that has a really cool crinkle to it - it can be tied in as a highlight, or as a wing, and it has enough stiffness so that it can be used to help create the silouette of the fly. This would be real nice blended with bucktail or other fibers to make deceivers, hollow fleyes, synthetic hair baitfish, and big predator style streamers. Fly Tier Mike Schmidt has published a real nice video of his "Ripple Ice Deceiver". You'd need a large quantity to tie the kind of fly that Mike has done in this video, but it's worth a look to see what this fiber can do (click "back" to return to Saltwaterflies.com after watching!) The "Electric" colors are hot flourescent colors, a bit different look than the regular colors. -- 4.50/pack.

Mega Mushy: Mega Mushy is a shredded mylar flash material packaged in a generous quantity. Bucktails: These are the same bucktails (deer tails) that we use in many of our custom tied saltwater flies. Used for tying deceivers, Clouser Minnows, Sand eel flies, and many more. High quality bucktails are not as easy to find as they once were, but we are particular about getting good bucktails, and these are all selected for quality. -- 11.99/ea. Tiers sometimes ask us what a synthetic substitute for bucktail would be, and though there is nothing that can replace bucktail exactly, the "Steve Farrar Blend" is a suitable substitute with a similar texture. NOTE: as of 1/11/23, we are adding a disclaimer about the quality of bucktails available on the market. Demand for bucktails has been high over the past year, and supplies have been limited. The quality of the bucktails that our suppliers are offering are not the same as they were even five years ago. Please understand that we will select the absolute best of what we have available to include with your order, but it is no longer possible to guarantee super-long bucktails with straight, dense hair. Having said that, your satisfaction is still guaranteed - if you receive some material from us that you are not satisfied with, let us know and we will make every effort to rectify that. As of January, 2023, supplies of bucktails continue to be very limited - we will keep trying to source as many bucktails as we can, but we expect shortages on these for at least the early part of 2023.

Grade #2 bucktails: We sort all of our bucktails for quality -
for one reason or another, these didn't make the grade. Sometimes it's short hair,
bent tips, hollow butts, or whatever. Still plenty useful for making popper tails,
squid flies, small flies (small Clousers, etc), bonefish flies, and more.
Limited supply in stock...Save big $$! - $2.39/ea! Please note: for the
Grade #2 bucktails: we cannot guarantee that we will have these available - they
are available sporadically, as we sort them out from the #1's. If you absolutely need to get
a particular color you want for your tying, you may wish to add a note in the
"Special Instructions" box when you reach the "Checkout" screen for your order - something like:
"Please substitute #1 if #2 is not available" will insure that you receive the color
you want (provided you are willing to pay for a #1 if #2 is not available).

Deer Belly Hair: We are now offering both Deer Belly and Deer Body Hair. Both of these Deer Hair styles are used to make spun deer hair flies like snake flies, backcountry flies, crab flies, muddler style heads, etc. Deer Belly is dyed over white hair from the belly area of the Whitetail Deer - because the various colors of this hair are dyed over white, the colors are more vibrant than Body hair. Deer Body hair (see next table below) is dyed over the natural brown body hair of the deer, so the colors are more muted, with some natural dark mottling to the hair, especially at the tips. Deer Belly Hair is more hollow than Deer Body Hair, which gives it greater bouyancy, and allows it to spin more easily, but the hairs typically have some curvature, and are shorter than Deer Body Hair. 5.99/ea

Deer Body Hair: - Premo Deer Hair Strips - Deer body hair is used to make spun deer hair flies like snake flies, backcountry flies, Tarpon Toads, crab flies, muddler style heads, etc. These colors are dyed over the natural brown body hair of the deer, so the colors feature some natural dark mottling to the hair, especially at the tips - this Deer Body Hair is the style used most frequently when a more natural color pattern is desired, such as for crab flies, etc. Deer Body Hair is typically longer and straighter than Deer Belly Hair, but it is not as hollow. We are now pleased to offer what is perhaps the best hair ever produced for saltwater fly tyers - "Premo Deer Hair Strips". These patches are selected for quality hair, and dyed to a wide range of colors useful for so many different flies. Each generously sized patch measures 3 inches by 12 inches (8 cm x 31 cm). Arctic Fox Fur: Soft, fine "Arctic Fox" fur is used for wings on small streamer flies, salmon/steelhead flies, etc. Makes a great wing for Gotcha, Crazy Charlie, and bunny bone type bonefish flies - has more action than calf tail or craft furs. Arctic Fox is similar to rabbit fur, but longer. This fur is on the skin; the hair averages approx 1 3/4 inches long, some packs have longer fur. -- 4.50/pack.

Arctic Fox Tail Hair

Arctic Fox Tail Hair

Arctic Fox Tail Hair: These are sometimes referred to as Fox Tail "Medallions". Fur from the tail of the fox instead of the body hair listed above - this has nice length, and a crinkly texture to the underfur - very nice for wings on bonefish flies, or adding bulk to the front of big streamers like muskie and pike flies. NOTE Some of the colors may feature strong black color tips on the guard hairs. -- 6.99/pack.

faux bucktail tan color

Faux Bucktail

Flymen Faux Bucktail: Flymen Fishing Company's "Faux Bucktail" is a new synthetic designed to emulate some of the characteristics of natural bucktail. These fibers feature tapered tips that are slightly staggered, similar to natural bucktail. It should be noted that Faux Bucktail is not a hollow fiber - we don't think it's likely that this will ever replace natural bucktail, as these fibers will not flare like natural bucktail during the tying process - good for some things, maybe not an ideal choice for others. This is a very tough synthetic hair - similar to Fishair - we would probably use this for some types of clouser minnows, popper tails, even some small epoxies. Tan color shown above... click for photos of the White, and to see the whole range of colors. -- 6.99/pk

FisHair: Considered by many tiers to be the "original" synthetic hair for tying saltwater flies. Though not as popular as it once was, this tough, durable fiber is still useful for many inshore and offshore streamer flies. Fishair is a generally a "straight" fiber with occasonially some slight wave to it, in contrast to many of the other "kinky" fibers like Super Hair, Unique Hair, Slinkyfiber, etc. This is the 70 denier (refers to the thickness), 6" length material - each pack contains a generous quantity. Nice intense colors - color names and numbers are the manufacturer's designations...the numbers that include a "B" feature a "bright, lustrous finish" according to the maker - these colors have a slight sheen to them. In response to many requests from our customers we now stock the full range of Fishair colors. Here's a photo of the Fishair color chart. -- 4.99/pk

Slinky Fibre / Flash N Slinky: Slinky Fibre by Just Add H20 Products / The Fishient Group has become one of the most popular "kinky" synthetic fibers available for making "sculpted baitfish" type patterns in deceiver shapes, etc. Great for large "spread" type flies, bunker patterns, squid flies, and more. Fibers are soft and flexible. The "Shrimp" color is tan; the "Off White" is a light silvery gray. To see an example of a fly tied with Slinky Fibre, please see this photo of the Tidewater Squid tied by Brian Dowd. Fibers in these packs are approx 8-9 inches (21-22 cm) long. Slinky Blend are blended colors - the maker is sometimes labelling this as "Baitfish Blend" now, but the product has not changed. we've offered some descriptions of those blend colors below. Steve Farrar Blend (SF Blend): Slinky Fibre colors custom blended with Angel Hair! Steve Farrar Blend is easily the top synthetic fibre going for making larger baitfish flies, squids, etc. Master Fly Tier Steve Farrar popularized the techniques for blending synthetic fibers & flash materials - see notes on Steve's blending techniques and learn how to make your own blends at the Atlantic Saltwater Fly Rodders website. The "Bleeding" colors have strands of red flash and other highlights mixed in - very nice. Also available are "UV" colors which have UV flash highlights blended right in. Pale colors like the Off White and Shrimp are excellent for wings on bonefish flies in #4 and #2 - the textured look of the Farrar Blend seems to have lots of appeal to bonefish. $9.95/pk. DNA "Frosty" Fish Fiber: These new synthetic fibers are perfect for making small hi-ties, epoxy flies & other baitfish styles. Here's a Photo of a nice Deciever style baitfish fly topped with DNA fibers in a "bomber" color scheme. The cool, frosty sheen of these fibers mimic real baitfish colors, and the variety of colors allows the tier to replicate the subtle colors of fish like silversides, herring, sand eels, and more. Nice translucency and durability. Each pack contains a generous hank of fibers - usable fiber length is approximately 7 1/2 inches (19 cm). Click the text link for a photo of the "Sea Foam" color.

-- All DNA Frosty has beeen discontinued as of 12/3/19 - we no longer have a source for this product --

Big Fly Fiber: For tying very large streamers for saltwater species like striped bass & giant trevally, as well as big freshwater predators like pike, peacock bass, golden dorado, and more, these fibers provide length and the appearance of bulk without adding undue weight to the fly. Excellent for big squid & baitfish flies. Big Fly Fibers are fluffy/curly fibers at the base, with straight tips for length (click product name above, or Here for representative photo of the fiber. The following photo shows a squid fly made with Big Fly Fiber in the maw of a very nice striped bass. Big Fly Fiber "Blends" are new; nice bold Big Fly Fiber colors blended with holographic flashabou - popular for Offshore flies, Muskie & Pike, and other big predator style flies. Feathers

Saddle Hackles: Prepackaged strung saddle hackles are standard fare for seaducers, snake flies, deceivers, and sliders, etc. If you need feathers mainly for Deceiver tails, please consider one of the "Whiting American Rooster Capes" - these are far more useful for Deceivers than strung saddle hackle. It has been our experience that the best strung saddle hackles are selected by the supply houses for dying to the various colors, leaving the rest of the hackles to be sold as "White". Even though "White is the most popular color by far, the typical package of white saddle hackle may contain fewer usable feathers than a pack of one of the dyed colors. If you need White saddle hackle, please consider the "Bulk Pack 1OZ" which contains a full ounce of hackle - this typically has better quality feathers than the loose packs also, and we try to pick the very best hackles for the full price 1 oz packs. We also offer 1 oz pks of "Grade 2" hackles - these are the same hackles that we request from our supplier as top grade, but not all the packs we receive are up to our standards for full ounce packs at full price. These are a bargain if you need shorter hackles, hackle for winding or palmering, or ones for squid flies, etc where the overall quality of the hackle is less of a concern. Click the product header link above to view a photo of the "Regular" size Packs. "Natural Brown" and "Natural Ginger" are natural color hackles - not dyed - the Nat. Brown is a darker feather that often has a bronze center, and the Nat. Ginger is a nice natural tan color - great for hackling some bonefish flies, and we have always loved these colors to hackle our wooly buggers too.

Magnum Saddles

Metz Magnum Saddles and Necks: Now here are some nice feathers! The Metz Magnum Saddles are grade #1; long, full saddles with a very high quality and a high feather count - these are the hard-to-find premium grade #1 saddles. Metz Magnum Saddles are shown in the photo above - click that photo to enlarge - here are two other photos of the Magnum Saddles: a detail of the Chartreuse, Orange, and Black, and a closeup of the Chartreuse. These saddles feature lots of useable feathers, with many feathers measuring 6-8 inches long and even more. Great saddles for tying flatwings, squid flies, hollow fleyes, snake flies, deceivers, and more. Limited quantities available. The Metz Magnum Necks that we stock are the grade #2, which are more suitable for saltwater flies than grade #1 - this is the product to choose if you want grizzly hackles to tie classic tarpon fly tails, or add barred hackle to bonefish flies - the Magnum Necks have lots of feathers, ranging in size from small to large - click here for a detail - this detail shows typical medium-sized feathers from the Metz Magnum Necks - there are lots of these on the neck, along with plenty of feathers both larger and smaller than that. Just to clarify a general point; Saddles feature relatively long, thin feathers that vary somewhat in length and shape, and Necks feature moderate length feathers with a very consistent shape. We sometimes are able to offer these as "1/2 Saddles" - this is literally just a whole saddle cut carefully in half, for half price for a more affordable option - see below for availability.

With a very high feather count, stiff stems, and good web, the Whiting American Rooster cape is one of the best Capes ever for deceiver Tails - you'll never buy strung saddle hackle for deceiver tails again. Feathers in the Grizzly and Dyed Grizzly colors are a bit wider at the end than the White color.
The Grizzly capes are probably some of the best hackle we've ever seen for keys style tarpon flies. Since each cape also has a small quantity of smaller size feathers, these are also great for backcountry flies, bonefish flies, and much more. Grizzly patterning is a nice "mottled" grizzly - not as strong barring as some feathers, excellent for making truly buggy looking flies. Don't miss out on these if you tie Largemouth Bass flies, either!
All of the Capes have some curvature to the feathers... Keep in mind that the "Natural White" is just that - these are not bleached (bleaching can degrade the quality of the feathers), so they really are more of a "Cream" color, with occasional speckles or brown markings, but these Capes still remain our top choice for deceivers. Note: All of these Whiting American Rooster Capes are available in limited quantity - we buy as many as we can each year, but we never get as many as we request. All of the Whiting Rooster Capes have been in short supply for several years, especially the Natural White and the Grizzly colors.

Whiting Bugger Packs:

whiting bugger packs

Whiting Bugger Packs feature longer hackles that can be useful for accents on larger flies like big decievers, hollow fleyes, squid flies, offshore flies etc. Although we don't typically use a full set of these for a deceiver tail, adding a pair or two of these feathers can help add length and color to a variety of larger flies.
Note that since Whiting typically puts these in a packages that is shorter than the feathers themselves, they may need a bit of steaming or soaking to straighten them before use. Pictured in the photo above are the "Grizzly Dyed Green Chartreuse", "Grizzly", and "Grizzly Dyed Orange" colors.

Crawdub (more photos coming soon): Crawdub dubbing was made with crustaceans in mind! Great texture and colors for making shrimp, crab, and other crustacean patterns. Nice long-fibered dubbing with a "sparkle binder" designed to build tough, shaggy bodies that can be picked out for a really buggy or shrimpy look. Ideal dubbing to use for "fuzzling" techniques, where a long-fibered dubbing is applied in conjunction with a sparkly chenille to give really nice "halo" effect - here's a page we found on the net with some great closeup photos of "fuzzled" flies: https://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=52705 (use your browser's "back" button to return to Saltwaterflies.com. 2.99/pack.

Round Rubber Legs: Round in cross section - these are sort of the "original" style rubber legs that were in use by fly tiers for many years...true rubber is preferred by some tiers because it has a better vibrating action in the water than some other styles, but they can grow brittle over time as rubber is a naturally derived material. Ultra Chenille: Ultra Chenille is the stuff typically used to make claws on crab flies and also wrapped as a body for small bonefish & permit flies - this is the body material used for the very popular Squimp style fly. Has a stiffer core than traditional nylon chenille, and it can be knotted, as well as burned to seal the end to a point. A neat trick for crab claws is to color the tips of the claws with a magic marker as an added hightlight. For freshwater tying this is the stuff that the "San Juan Worm" is made from. Three sizes to choose from; "Micro" is the smallest, "Medium" is the largest. -- 3.25/pack.

EP Tarantula Hairy Legs Brush: These "Tarantula Legs" Dubbing Brushes by Enrico Puglisi Ltd. are so very cool - they feature lots of very fine rubber legs blended with sparse synthetic fibers for maximum action in the water. These brushes are one of the best ways to tie a variety of patterns for bonefish, redfish, tarpon, and many other backcountry & flats dwellers, not to mention freshwater fish like big trout & largemouth bass. Great for small & medium sized crabs & crustaceans, seaducer type flies, toad flies, and more. Two sizes available - 1 inch, and 1/2 inch. These sizes refer to the approximate length of the fibers extending out to one side of the wire core of the brush. Click on the product header links below to see photos of these brushes. We have tied some great bonefish & redfish crabs with these by simply wrapping the brush & trimming it top & bottom, and we have also made some tarpon seaducer styles and toads by wrapping the brush, and leaving it round for seaducers, or trimming it top & bottom for toads - Here's a photo of some "Tarpon Ticklers" tied with the 1" brush (flies tied by Chris Windram). Please note that the range of available colors is slightly different for each size. 14.95/pack

EP Minnow Head Brush 1.5": One of our favorite EP Dubbing Brushes - these "Minnow Head" brushes feature nice, densely packed fibers & flash in great colors. We like to wrap these brushes, and then trim them to shape - great for toad flies, tarpon sliders, etc. Here's a closeup photo of the purple color... here's a photo of a "Minnow Head Mullet" tied with the White color, and one of a couple of tarpon flies tied with the Minnow Head Brushes - both of these flies feature these brushes on the head, wrapped and trimmed to shape. The brush can also be left untrimmed for a nice full collar. Width of the brush is approximately 1.5 inches. Each "brush" is approximately 10 inches (26 cm) long; 6 brushes per pack. Enrico lists all of these as "UV" colors, as he does so many of his brushes & fibers - we have omitted the "UV" designation from the color names to save space. -- $14.95/pack
